Vermont

In 1609, the French claimed the land of Vermont but then surrendered it to the British when the French and Indian Wars ended. Fort Ticonderoga was taken from the British in the Revolutionary War by the “Green Mountain Boys.” This militia organization was initially set up to drive settlers from New York out of Vermont. Monument granite and talc significantly contribute to the state’s revenue. Additionally, Vermont’s primary agricultural focus is dairy and orchards.

Its rugged and rocky terrain limits it in other agricultural pursuits but is a strong draw for tourists. The region is home to numerous renowned ski resorts, contributing enormously to the state’s economy. On a social-political level, the state is a leader in gay rights, becoming the first state to allow same-sex civil unions to be legalized (and the fourth to legalize same-sex marriage). Vermont provides a start-up-friendly environment with its open culture and stable economy, making it a wise choice for small businesses.
