North Carolina

North Carolina is the U.S.’s 9th most populous state. During the Revolutionary War, it was part of the Confederacy, even though many of its residents were pro-Union. Nicknamed “The Tar Heel State” because of its origins as a critical player in the tar industry, North Carolina is now better-known for its knowledge-based businesses, including pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

The state’s highest-populated city, Charlotte, is the U.S.’s second-largest banking center. Tourism also plays a pivotal role in the state’s income, with the Great Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge National Parkway drawing in visitors. Information-based and technological small businesses will do well in the region.
