Maryland

The state was one of the original 13 colonies forming the U.S. Initially, it was formed as a haven for Catholics fleeing religious persecution by Protestant England. It has since been the home of noteworthy figures, including Frederick Douglass, Upton Sinclair, Benjamin Banneker, and Thurgood Marshall.

The bombardment of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry during the Revolutionary War inspired the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Modern-day Maryland’s economy prospers thanks to its agricultural products, including dairy, eggs, soybeans, and chickens. Chesapeake Bay is a significant producer of seafood. Its location close to Washington D.C. means that small businesses can have better access to government contracts.
