In 1803, the land, now recognized as Iowa and nicknamed “The Hawkeye State,” was attained due to the Louisiana Purchase. However, it only gained official state status in 1846. The area is divided by the Mississippi (to the east) and Missouri and Big Sioux (to the west) rivers. It produces a staggering one-tenth of the whole country’s food supply, making it an agricultural force to be reckoned with.

These food products include hogs, soybeans, and corn. Manufacturing also thrives in the state. Iowa provides ample small business opportunities with its low cost of living and highly proficient labor force. Happily, it’s also one of the nation’s safest states.
